Welcome and thank you for visiting my website. I’m Kevin Felix Chan, and I also go by my initials, KFC! My current pursuits in life are developing as a business leader, exploring as a world traveler, and living life as a young adult. I write a monthly article on this site about my experiences in career, travel, and lifestyle design.
Career
My career so far is defined by my pursuits in general management and in entrepreneurship.
I am part of the AT&T Leadership Development Program and have been through management rotations in three different capacities. I currently work as a product marketing manager for mobile devices and previously worked as an operations manager in the U-verse IPTV group and as a sales manager in the advertising solutions group. In addition, I have leadership responsibilities with AT&T’s Asian Pacific Islanders employee resource group.
I am also an entrepreneur and founded an education company, Best Delegate. Our goal is to help students make a difference in the world through participation in Model United Nations, and we do this by developing a marketplace of leadership skills training resources.
Travel
I love traveling and have a travel page on this website dedicated to it. I am currently exploring Atlanta and plan to visit cities throughout the Southern United States and the East Coast in 2011. I also plan to take another international trip as I have done in the past few years.
Highlights from the past few years include: trips to Central America and Central Europe in 2010, a trip to Asia in 2009, and an around-the-world trip focusing on Western Europe and Southeast Asia in 2008.
Lifestyle Design
My top lifestyle design influences are: Tim Ferriss, Keith Ferrazzi, Chris Guillebeau, Ramit Sethi, Neil Strauss, Seth Godin, Jim Collins, and Garr Reynolds.
In my spare time, I mentor and volunteer with the UCLA Alumni Association, volunteer with AT&T at community events such as Junior Achievement and Special Olympics, and coordinate the Model United Nations program for the Contra Costa County Office of Education.
Some of my interests include: ethnic cuisines, cultures and languages, photography, exploring cities, watching sports, social media, international development, and dinner parties.
Extended Biography
I was born in Fullerton, California. My parents are both immigrants – one is from Guangzhou, China and the other from Macau, but both spent time in Hong Kong before immigrating. I also have a younger brother. I grew up in Rowland Heights, California, an Asian and Hispanic enclave that has since evolved into a fusion Chinatown-Koreatown hub in southern California. Cantonese was the lingua franca in the household. Growing up in my hometown is significant because it helped shaped my cultural identities as an Asian-American and Californian.
I think my parents gave me the best opportunities possible given their middle-class, immigrants-turned-professionals background. I went through the Rowland Unified public school system, progressing through schools that all had blue and gold as their school colors (as would my university). I worked hard to be a top student in school and worked hard after school to be a model student in Chinese school. Summers consisted of playing with my brother and cousins as well as playing league basketball and recreational swimming. Although I never got the chance to go abroad while I was growing up, my family did try to take domestic trips every year or so, for which I am grateful because it instilled in me an interest in traveling.
This blog really has its roots to my sophomore year in high school when I first began making New Year’s Resolutions. Back then, I used to play computer games every night before doing homework, but I realized I would have to quit if I were to survive the International Baccalaureate Diploma program, not to mention all the extracurricular activities I was involved with: Model UN, band, tennis, etc. I successfully achieved my goal of quitting computer games that year and have been following through with my New Year’s Resolutions ever since.
UCLA was my childhood dream university and turned out to be everything I wanted in an undergraduate experience. I had a blast and grew a lot personally through a variety of activities including UCLA Model United Nations, mentoring groups, the Alumni Scholars Club, UCLA Marching Band, and several culture clubs and honor societies. In addition to UCLA, I earned a Certificate in Financial Management from Cornell University and had a life-changing study abroad experience while earning my Certificate in International Relations at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. I enjoyed majoring in political science, but after professional experiences with UNA-USA, AT&T, the UCLA Anderson School, and the Boeing Company, I decided I wanted to focus on a career in leadership and signed on with AT&T’s Leadership Development Program.
Recent adventures in life have been a thrill so far. I completed an around-the-world trip before moving up to the San Francisco Bay Area to do my first two rotations with AT&T. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Bay Area and also got to travel to Asia and the East Coast since starting work. I also just did a tour of North America and now I am starting my final rotation at AT&T in Atlanta. Overall, I am enjoying life and I intend to keep the adventure going!
